technology

I never know what to write on here, but this week I was thinking about new technology and how fast it is always changing.  I was also made aware of how technology is a very big part of our lives and how it will continue to be.  I went cell phone shopping this week with one of my roomates and my boyfriend.  I just got my first cell phone 6 months ago and was amazed to see how different the new ones are from mine and just how dated mine looks.  My boyfriend has what you might call a cell phone fetish and has to have a new cell everyone two months in order to keep up with the latest technology.  This made me realize how just how powerful technology and advertising is to people of our generation and just how dependant we are on our gadgets like computers and cell phones.  My dad would say this is horrible because he doesn’t even have a cell phone yet.  I don’t think technology is a bad thing at all but if we let it control our minds it can get rather expensive.

The cell phone craze is actually becoming quite common. It seems that everywhere I look swarms of people are equipped with the latest, music playing, picture taking, video capturing cell phones. In fact, the obsession with being “up to date” with technology seems to exist in terms of many technological devices.
It was just today that my younger brothers and I were in the mall shopping, and the youngest of us four children told me that for his birthday, all he wants is an xbox 360. Even for a nine year old, having a Wii, xbox, nintendo 64, nintendo DS, and gameboy all under the same roof isn’t, in his eyes, sufficient.
Will the inventors of all these wonderful games, cell phones, ipods, and even cameras be able to keep up with our ever changing technological needs and desires?

  2. I agree, we are very technologically dependent in this culture. And I do find that a lot of children are really into gaming. This is fine to a point, but I do think it is important that we still acknowledge the realities of the physical world around us. If there was a way to say, go on a hike, and then have a virtual experience which is computer based, to discuss it, for example, afterward, then I am all for this. But personally, I can only sit still for so long…maybe because I am a bit older. I’m not sure.

Oh i totally agree that cell phones have taken over this world one text at a time!I am guilty of being a textaholic and I admit that it’s ridiculous how addicted I am to my cell phone. I have it with me at all timesand am always checking it. I actually envy those who aren’t a slave to their cell phones as sad as that sounds. Of course having communication at the reach of ur pocket is also a huge innovative plus for emergency and immediate situations. But like you said about your boyfriend needing a new phone all the time I think thats crazy cause I am like that too. Whenever I get a new phone I always think its so sweet and then two months goes by and theres something newer and more exciting! All I have to say is if you have the strength not to give in to texting as a ritual then good for you! haha
